The Wildcat Lodge - Snowmass, CO
Based strongly and unabashedly upon the legacy of Gilbert Stanley Underwood and his tragically lacerated Lodge at the North Rim, this grand home overlooks a great mountain chasm high in the Colorado Rockies. The house was meant to become, in a sense, a clear presentation of intriguing simplicity and of delicate western craftsmanship. Simultaneously, the approach, arrival and experience of this great mountain escape suggest that the mass of the building and its rich materiality disguise a boastful and somewhat mysterious complexity. Reminiscent in its design foundation to many other of the National Parks creations of Underwood, The Wildcat Lodge is practical, bold and emphatically beautiful. This house is simply resplendent in its position on the ranch and formidable in it expression of durable grace and quite strength. Overlooking the distant Snowmass ski resort, the building is uni-directional in layout and programmed similarly to a boutique hotel (the size of the structure is 22,000 gsf): every room has a noble view of Mount Sopras and its subordinate peaks, every suite has opulent amenities and rich material, the kitchen arrangement is intentionally spectacular and the house is resolutely designed to take advantage of the Colorado lifestyle and its amazing location. The rooms of this home are generously yet carefully scaled to the foreground plateau while responding with elegance to the mountain chain beyond. The light pours in, the air is pure, and the luxury of each space is apparent and consistent with the beauty of the mountain majesty beyond.
