Maytag Mountain Ranch - Hillside, CO
Russ Maytag, the ranching coordinator for the Storm Mountain Ranch project, is himself a world-renowned cattleman and breeder. With the success of SMR, Russ reassembled the team responsible for this well-known ranch stewardship project to work with his own unique piece of western heritage in the south central region of the Sangre de Cristo wilderness. While 4240 at the time was not interested in pursuing an additional ranch stewardship project, Robert Fitzgerald teamed with an associate to produce one of Colorado's most sustainable and self-sufficient ranch projects. The 2653 acre Maytag Ranch, now home to 27 lucky partners, is a working cattle ranch with a huge haying operation, all settled amongst historic homesteads and naturally flowing below-grade aquifers. The amenity buildings, all designed by Fitzgerald, are a bit simpler, richly textured and somewhat smaller in scale; while the land is, by contrast, far more dramatic, open and endless-appearing than that of similar ranch conservation projects. Like Storm Mountain, the Maytag Mountain Ranch is the recipient of many awards for its sustainable, logical, and thoughtful planning, amenities and conceptualization.
