Elk Creek Ranch - Meeker, CO
The Elk Creek Ranch, situated to the east of Meeker, Colorado along one of North America's best fishing rivers, was a destination over the years for the owner's many friends and associates. In his youth, he had hand-built a log fishing lodge and some small crash cabins, replete with fun and funky spaces, roaring fireplaces and the obligatory bar. As word spread of the value in conservation and the benefit of limited development upon the remaining ranch land of the west, the owner contacted Robert Fitzgerald and commissioned him to design a fishing village for the high-end fishing homeowners into which his friends had morphed. While many buildings were already scattered haphazardly about the riverside site, Fitz renovated, moved, pushed, pulled added and subtracted until a well crafted village for family use, fine dining, fish stories and late night star gazing appeared. Nearly all of the original material on the ranch was re-used, yet the prototype cabin designs were all-new and have proven to be immensely popular. The White River now has its first resort/living destination in many years and the fishing is as fine as ever. Now the owner has his friends firmly anchored on his beautiful land while Colorado has another open space that will survive and be utilized by many for years to come as a great place of fishing.
