The River Park Townhomes and Garage - Aspen, CO
Constructed on the former location of one of Aspen's original homesteads, this 12-townhome project on Original Curve in the historic yet tony environs of one of Colorado's most famous mining settlements, was far ahead of its time. With regard to its level of luxury, integrated historical references, and contemporary mountain living, the River Park Townhomes predated Aspens billionaire revival by 10 years and set a standard for infill and redevelopment within Aspen's core area. Built in the early 1990s, the 83,000 s.f. development appears as a series of brownstones, consistent with the long and rhythmically grand march of brick buildings along Aspen's Main Street that includes the Jerome Hotel and the Sardy House. Below what appears to be a landscaped courtyard, swimming pool facility and neighborhood gathering place is a 50 car garage, storage location, ski concierge facility and entry elevator system for each of the townhomes above. The plan of the residences produces a classic, urban, and luxurious walk-up lifestyle (with the obligatory employee residences integrated strongly into the U-shaped, three-story form) with rich millwork and commercial grade kitchens throughout. Atop each home is an awe-inspiring outdoor room, affording incredible views of the Aspen Mountain ski resort beyond. The project received many awards in the time since its initial planning and construction. Mr. Robert E. Fitzgerald, one of NAKA Designs, LLC's founding principals was the senior designer of the project under the leadership of Mike Mulhern, AIA.
