The Stapleton Town Center - Denver, CO
Robert Fitzgerald was one of five designers at Urban Design Group asked by Forest City Development and their New Urbanist consulting team to conceptually design the mixed-use town center at the Stapleton airport re-development. The goal of the excersize was to theme the new core of this rambling suburban development in a manner consistent with the sustainability goals of the team and the historic fabrics and patterns of Denver's classic neighborhoods. Styles studied included, Arts and Crafts, Modernism, Industrial residential lofts, and classic Denver residential over retail. The latter was the style studied, designed and hand drawn by Fits during the charette and presentation format which followed.

The team chose a hybrid combination of Fitz's scheme and the simpler, though very similar, Industrial Loft aesthetic. In the intervening period, the center has been built and widely noted as being one of the great re-use developments of central urban land in the U.S. The town center, generally successful given the somewhat suburban context which surrounds it, is fun, new urbanist, for whatever that's worth, and a destination retail environment.
