The High Street Plaza T.O.D - Lexington, KY
Part of the re-development of the core area of Lexington, Kentucky, this transit-oriented-development was to sit atop an existing and severely underutilized parking structure that had served only to separate the University of Kentucky campus district of Lexington from its declining central downtown. It would have, therefore, helped greatly to re-connect the two suffering districts of town and would also have helped to re-vitalize the surrounding historic housing neighborhoods. In addition, the project was to provide much-needed space for office, small scaled retail and a community college that had long been attempting to move to the town core as well. Robert E. Fitzgerald was the senior designer responsible for completing the schematic work for a Lexington developer who needed only to rally the local politicians in support of the development.

Through well thought out pedestrian circulation strategies and the complete separation of pedestrian and automobile, the existing garage surprisingly turned out to be the perfect "vehicle" for this fairly dense mixture of urban uses which even included the insertion of a much needed grocery store into the historic district. Unfortunately, politics ultimately killed the project before it could get underway.
