We believe these works to be great examples of a sustainable practice - the re-use and reclamation of a treasured structure, home or space. We take this sort of design responsibility to heart and thoroughly enjoy the education inherent in the restoration of a living environment.

Ranch Stewardship/Residential
Brought in by invitation to the delightful realm of preserving the Colorado western ranching tradition, these works have proven to be some of our most satisfying. The ranchers benefit, the region benefits, and some lucky people are allowed to enjoy one of the west's great ways of life.

Multi-family Residential
Less personal a process perhaps than that of single-family design, these works are extremely important none-the-less; and complex as well. We learn from each of our developer-lead residential projects and enjoy the results most when they aid in the revitalization of under-utilized and under-valued neighborhoods and cities.

Mixed Use Development
Often associated with transit projects and typically involving complex relationship between multi-family residential, community use, and urban landscapes, these projects are intense and attractive expressions of modern day life. While many of the projects shown are un-built, the oeuvre represents years of cultural and contextual study.

Lionshead Skier Bridge
So special was our foray into bridge design that we felt this one needed its own section in our Portfolio. Actually, it just did not fit into any other section all that well. The bridge was an amazing endeavor though, really. It was done quickly and with a great contractor and engineer. It so radically altered the skiing experience in Lionshead and yet appears to have been there for many years. It's cool, and just one of a handful of bridges we have done prior and since its completion.

Made up of work produced essentially for the "public good", institutional work brings with it rewards of public notice and sometimes public acclaim. These projects span many years but are, hopefully, to be seen as timeless, effective, and still, to this day, producing benefits beyond those enjoyed by only a few.

Hospitality
To be hospitable, through the design and construction of resort hotels, brings both challenges and rewards. Again these benefit more than just a few, but they are to be enjoyed in the moment - at the point at which they are being occupied. The world of hospitality is complex, sexy, subjective, changing and challenging.

Furniture Design
Our notion of lifestyle design naturally leads us to hope that we may move freely amongst the varying scales of design. We enjoy participating, therefore, in the design of furniture and artifacts as much as we do in the processes of mixed use and hospitality development. NAKA intends to continue to expand our design influence into these sorts of product design as we move also into retail and web-based sales.

Though this category presents relatively few possibilities given today's economy, the notion of the creation of speculative space still intrigues us. One designs for the client's client here and one rarely ever gets to meet the end user. Yet there is, as with institutional work, the ever-present sense that one is profoundly affecting the larger world. We do not often hear from those whose lives are held within them directly, but the design which is fostered upon the larger context always has a sense of the relatively permanent and the sometimes omnipotent.

Like bridges, barns are a unique opportunity. Fortunately, we have had several great chances to design homes for our equine friends. For the humans involved, these places take on an iconic stance and a romantic nostalgia, yet in reality they are based upon pure function as well. A very interesting category really; and we see ourselves as lucky to have participated in it.
